Perfect Picture Book Fridays: Alphabet

I promise this is my final A to Z reference for the week. I’ll bombard you with letters during the A to Z Challenge in April. As I wrote this post, there were 446 participants. Sign up continues.

Today, I’ve chosen Alphabet by Matthew Van Fleet for Perfect Picture Book Fridays.

Alphabet A Paula Wiseman Book
Written and Illustrated by Matthew Van Fleet
Edited and Art Directed by Skip Skwarek
Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers, 2008

Suitable for:  Ages 2 and up

Theme/Topic:  Alphabet, ABCs

Opening: The title page welcomes you with a cast of animals spelling out Alphabet with their bodies, beaks and tails.

The first page includes: Scaly green Alligators, Bristly yellow Bees, Scratcy pink Cougar tongues, Blue Dragonflies … shimmery.

Brief Synopsis: From the back cover — An amazing ABC safari for Preschoolers! In Matthew Van Fleet’s incredible new multiconcept book, over 100 creatures and plants from A to Z hilariously demonstrate action words, synonyms, opposites, and more. Young explorers are challenged to spot four plants or animals that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Twenty three textures plus foils, flags, pull tabs, and even a scratch-and-sniff scent add to the interactive surprises on every page.”

Link to Resources: K-3TeacherResources.com has some free alphabet posters. The iTunes store has some free apps to download for your iPhone or iPad to practice writing or tracing the alphabet. The Super Teacher Worksheets site has several free alphabet worksheets.

I’ve cut off some of the two-page spread, but wanted you to see inside. Isn’t the artwork a delight?

Why I chose this book: I’m on my A to Z kick this week. The illustrations are beautiful. The textures added to the animals are perfect. The flaps and pulls are in the right place. The book also includes a large ABC poster with 26 pop-ups! Stimulation overload for mom and kiddo. Enzo received this book for his first birthday. I promptly put it away, because he wanted to destroy it. I’m sticking to the age limit on this one. He will see it again on his second birthday.

    Have a wonderful weekend, Stacey.

    1. Yes. I love the illustrations and am protective. We’ll parent through the destruction I’m sure.

  2. 26 pop ups AND a poster…. I want to play with this book, too! That artwork is gorgeous!

  3. I love Matthew Van Fleet! What a great choice this is – I’m sure the illustrations are fantastic! And there’s always room for another alphabet book! Thanks so much for string this one, Stacy – I actually hadn’t seen it before!

    1. I’m going to check out some of his other books. I’m sure we’ll be reading lots of ABC books in the future.

  4. Cuteness!
    Hey I’m your 200th follower!! Do I get a door prize?? J/K 🙂 Congrats on 200!

    1. Virtual confetti and baloons dropped from the sky. I hope it didn’t mess up your hair. Thanks for the follow!

  5. There’s just something about van Fleet’s animals – they are so cute! Long after my kiddos were done with board books I held onto some with his adorable illustrations. Super appealing to my eye!

    1. It’s fun for many ages. Enzo is still in his explore and destroy stage. We’re working on it.

  6. Shimmery blue dragonflies? I’m in! And my boys have their second birthday coming up…hmmm. However, they just destroyed the flap book they got for Christmas, so this one might be an under-supervision-only reading choice. Love the illustrations!

    1. I’m glad to hear I’m not the only one that finds a few destroyed flap pieces around the house. Tape is my friend to repair some books.

  7. Sounds like a fascinating ABC book. They sure make them different than they did in the old days.

    1. My son has a few flap books that were published 25 years ago. They are a wonderful way to get him involved and teach basic vocabulary, colors, animals, etc.

  8. I have two of these books! The first one got all worn out and we just HAD to get another lol. Thanks for the great review Stacy 🙂

  9. Wahaaaa. I can’t get my comments to fly right today (second try). ABC books have always bored me, Stacy, but I will have to buy this one. Those illustrations are super duper. I said in my last comment that I should probably have stock in Amazon. *grin* (((hugs)))

    1. Robyn, this book is sort of like an iPhone of board books. Lots of stuff going on to keep one’s attention.

  10. This looks like such fun! Thank you! Most of the alphabet books I’ve seen lately seem geared toward older children, which doesn’t make a lot of sense to me. This one seems just right — and as Joanna said, I want to play with it, too!

    1. Beth, I’ve seen lots of fun alphabet books, but they reach into a much higher word count. That doesn’t work for my kiddo yet.

  11. What a fun pop-up interactive book. I can imagine Enzo loving this! I love how you introduce so many books that are apropriate for his age. Great review and selection!

  12. I hate to tell you this, but my son was still tearing up pop-up books at age 2. 😉

  13. My almost 3 year old still has some, “oopsies,” with books.

What a fun choice though! My boys have always loved the textured books.

    1. Hmm. Julie and Natalie, I’m seeing a trend. My son is loving books and it’s so fun to let him flip pages and play. I just hate hearing the tear of paper ….

  14. It looks like a terrific book for the younger ones-my granddaughter for sure, although (as others above said) she isn’t always so careful with books yet. Nevertheless, she is now working on the alphabet & this looks just right. Thanks, Stacey!

  15. Cute, cute and cute…. so love the artwork and what a wonderful way to teach kids the alphabet. Love that it is so interactive, they will have a lot of fun. Thanks for sharing Stacy!

  16. I salute you for putting it away for a bit…I know it is hard, but your son will appreciate it all the more…I know you have plenty of books that are less “breakable” that he can use now. 🙂

This sounds (and looks) like a super book…I love books that have fold-out/pop-up features…and kids love them also.
Thanks, Stacy, for a great review…and the resources are wonderful!

  17. Hey Stacy! I am back bearing a gift for you…. I have awarded you the Liebster Blog Award…pop over to my blog to collect it. Congratulations.

  21. I thought this book looked familiar – we had Tails when the boys were younger! An excellent choice for this weeks PPBF.

  22. I love how interactive it sounds. Like an app for ebooks. I’m going to have to look for this one in the store. Can’t pass this up. thanks, Stacy.

  23. Cute book and great post/info, thanks:)

You are sooo ahead of me when it comes to A-Z… must get better prepared… it’s going to be fun 🙂

  24. The cover of this book is darling! We can’t get enough alphabet books in the library! 🙂

  25. Sounds like a fun book for little ones to read. The illustrations are wonderful. The cover is so cute.

  26. We loved this book! Our favorite was the sticky octopus. “Tails” is also a very fun book too and doesn’t have the poster overload in the back.

I bought a good E-lite about a weeκ ago, i believed іt was оk, plus it got me thinking
that і геally could гeally make usе of an
electronic cig as a replacement. Nonetheless, with the E-lite, the particulaг
vapour cгеation was not acceptable, it ѕеnsed like thеre waѕ clearly too much аtmosрhеre being let in
and alѕo the vapour juѕt never felt heavy еnough.
It had been a decent, аnd comparatively cheap try thingѕ out, but it still left mе ωanting a real e cigаrette at night just before i ѵіsited
