Y is for youth
I have a notebook of poems and essays I wrote as a teen. While many are the standard angst filled pieces, I found this one to share with the characters Dude and Babe.
One Minute Play
Dude: What’s the fuss about?
Babe: The toilet seat.
Dude: Looks fine to me
Babe: It’s up.
Dude: So.
Babe: It was made to be down. You always put the seat down.
Dude: Couldn’t it just stay up.
Babe: But I’d have to always put it down.
Dude: Well, I always have to put it up.
Babe: Who cares?
The End
This was written on Aug. 14, 1988. I also wrote some young adult novels in my spare time. I’m guessing my parents properly destroyed all the papers I left under my bed.
Oh, I cringe at the thought of these stories, but had so much fun writing them. Did anyone else do that?

I love those boots, Stacy. Were they called pixie boots, I had some too. I wrote a very angsty piece about the meaning of life. i hope I find it amongst my belongings some time ha, ha, haaa.

Catherine, Who knows what they were called. I typically bought discount/thrift store finds. I found one picture of a vintage dress I know I paid $1. Oh, to find those deals today!

Your youth wasn’t that long ago — my guess is my son is near your age — for me it’s just a blink in time and the clothes weren’t that terribly different. I did love your poem, as it is a constant source conversation in my house.

I actually didn’t start writing until I was 24 so I don’t have anything hidden away. Sometimes I wish I kept a journal or something.

Love the old pictures of you. My older sister convinced me it would be cool to wear orange bell-bottoms to my first day of high school (in 1994). It was not. I wished I’d kept more of my old writings. If nothing else, it’s fun to see how far we all come after a decade or so.
