Here’s my Perfect Picture Book Friday choice:
B is for Bulldozer: A Construction ABC
Written by June Sobel
Illustrated by Melissa Iwai
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2003
Fiction
Suitable for: Ages 2 and up
Themes/Topics: Alphabet, Construction/Building, Amusement Parks
Opening Line: Do you see the Asphalt for paving the road or the big shiny Bulldozer pushing a load?
Synopsis: (from Amazon) Get ready for a ride through the alphabet at a busy construction site. There’s a big yellow Bulldozer, a tall shiny Crane, a rusty red Dump truck–and the construction crew is hard at work. But what are they building?
Link to Resources: Lesson plan on construction sites. Author June Sobel has some activities for another ABC book she wrote on her website.
Why I Like This Book: The story and the illustration work together to tell the story of this construction site, which turns out to be an amusement park. The story and the art make this book an easy one to read again and again and again. B is for a Bulldozer blends a love of all things construction with a simple story. This board book would make a nice gift for new parents and toddlers. June Sobel explains why she didn’t illustrate her own story on her website.

GREAT link to June Sobels’ page – such an interesting story.
So many kids just can’t get enough of construction books – this will be a big PPBF hit for sure!
I love those stories don’t you Cathy?
You are the ABC book queen! This is a clever one. My library doesn’t have it, but I’m on the hunt.
I’ve just read so many recently. The other new books have already made the PPBF list.
We’ve read this one, and it was a hit with our family! My preschooler loves diggers, and this was right up his alley! 🙂 Thanks for the reminder—we need to check this one out again!
Yep. We like diggers and all types of trucks here in our house.
What a big colorful cover. Love that they are building an amusement park at it is so much more interesting than a building. Not only is a great ABC book, it tells a story about construction. Kids will enjoy pouring over the details.
It is perfect on several levels Patricia.
Nice perspective on the cover – and thanks for the link!
I always enjoy finding a link to the “story behind the story.”
I love ABC books! I’ve not seen this one, but I have a Princess in mind who would love it. I’m on the hunt! Thanks for sharing!
The alphabet rock.
Reminds me of Amusement Park Tycoon (game). Fun idea in a board book. I love those too.
I’m not familiar with that game. Will have to check it out.
I knew this was an Enzo book!
His mom really likes Disney World, so I like the thought of building an amusement park.
This one will really be popular with the boys. Thanks for the review.
It is a fun one!
I love ABC books and am thrilled that my library has this one! The fact that it turns out to be an amusement park is a bonus!
I love the zoom zoom rides at amusement parks!
Nice book, and interesting link to June’s website. Thanks.
It’s a fun little book. I love to read a little back story on the story too!
