Zoo Poo
We found this Perfect Picture Book Friday at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo:

Zoo Poo
Written and Illustrated by Richard Morgan
Barron’s, 2004
Suitable for: Ages 2 and up
Theme/Topic: Poo, Potty Training
Opening: “How do you doo-doo at the zoo?”
Brief Synopsis: Charlie watches the animals poo-in-progress during a visit to the zoo. In the end, he shows how he poos differently.
Link to Resources: The book has a page of tips for parents to talk about potty training. Charlie leaves a note of encouragement at the end of the story explaining his potty experience.
Why I chose the book: This was an impulse purchase as we “exited through the gift shop.” Earlier, we watched a hippo swimming with her floating poop. Plus, I have a boy. I may need to familiarize myself with bathroom/poo-type humor. Anyone have a great resource or potty training tip? I may need those myself soon.

I hope everyone had a great Picture Book Idea Month. I’ve spent a lot of time in hiding doing homework and wrapping up final projects for this semester, but have been jotting down ideas. My goal next year should be for one a day. PiBoIdMo always gets the creative juices flowing. Thanks again Tara Lazar!

How fun! There’s a lot more poo talk in that than my potty talk pb. Interesting!
My advice would be don’t get advice from me 😉
Good luck with your course, how long is it?

It seems like its a very individualized experience for parents and children. 🙂 Next Sunday, I should be finished. Then, I’ll see if the next class I need will be taught.

What a great concept for a book! A little like Everyone Poops, but in a zoo setting – I love it! I think you’re right, boys would like it, but with the animals girls would probably like it too 🙂 Thanks for adding a book on this important topic to our list! And yes… with a boy you’re probably in for a lot of bathroom humor, although honestly my girls were pretty involved with that too 🙂

I think it’s a universal topic … Funny. I find Moms talking about it a lot. 🙂

How cute. I would never have imagined a book about zoo poo, but a great way to teach potty habits, I guess! 🙂

We’re off to the zoo today (since Kiddo needs a break from Mommy’s homework)! We may see poo in action.
Susanne Drazic
LOL, sounds like it might be a helpful potty training book. Cute cover. Hope you had fun at the zoo. : )

What will they write about next? My best advice is to wait until they are ready. I think some people try potty training at a way too early age. All three of my boys were trained at around 2 1/2 yrs old. I waited until then and it was very easy. I’m posting on Christmas PBs next month! I’m trying for a different one each day.

That is very creative. I never had to use books. It was plain ‘ole perseverence and puppets that did the trick–and doing it at an early age.

Could totally see this being a bestseller at Boston’s Franklin Park zoo. At our July visit we witnessed a memorable incident with a notorious gorilla. Nuff said.
Good luck with you end-of-semester endeavors Stacy!

The title and then that smiling face reeled me in. What a cute book!
Hope school is going well Stacy. 🙂

I am laughing out loud! What a fun book for kids. Think its important to address topics like this. Perfect choice!
Julie Rowan-Zoch
Tantalizing title!lol
Joanna
What a cool title/setting for this topic!
Romelle Broas
Gotta love that title. Wished that cam out when my kids were being potty trained.
Carrie Finison
Lemme tell ya — boys are not the only ones who appreciate bathroom humor. This book seems like it would be perfect for both genders.
Sandi Purdell-Lewis
Gorilla doo doo has nothing on elephant production. Needs to be seen to be believed!

Wow. In library class, right before we started our read-aloud, our class somehow started talking about farts… Interesting book…
Sue Wang
Cute. It had me at Zoo Poo. Nice idea for potty training. Never could have too many. 🙂

Hahahaha! What a great book!!! I sometimes have to poo at school and it really cracks the kids up! And I’ve actually seen a book with real photos of animals “getting busy” as we say. Thanks for the laugh!
Beth Stilborn
This should be a hit with kids — and hopefully it’ll help in the potty-training department, too, as long as Enzo focuses on the kid’s example and not the animals! 😉

Well that is one sure-fire way of getting kids attention to read, I must say…lol. Guess there’s a story anywhere..huh?
Like Beth I hope it helps with Enzo’s potty training…

Yes. The name is a real hook. We had a great time at the zoo. I’ve been buried under a final project.

That gift shop is so hard to leave unscathed! Cute book. I’m not sure I ever found any great books on potty training, though both kids enjoyed one that had a button they could flush to do the toilet flushing sound. Neither of them really enjoyed the sound of a toilet flushing in an enclosed bathroom–too loud–so this was good. I don’t remember what it was called, though.
