Here’s my Perfect Picture Book Friday choice:

B is for Bulldozer: A Construction ABC
Written by June Sobel
Illustrated by Melissa Iwai
Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, 2003
Fiction
Suitable for: Ages 2 and up
Themes/Topics: Alphabet, Construction/Building, Amusement Parks

Opening Line: Do you see the Asphalt for paving the road or the big shiny Bulldozer pushing a load?

Synopsis: (from Amazon) Get ready for a ride through the alphabet at a busy construction site. There’s a big yellow Bulldozer, a tall shiny Crane, a rusty red Dump truck–and the construction crew is hard at work. But what are they building?

Link to Resources: Lesson plan on construction sites. Author June Sobel has some activities for another ABC book she wrote on her website.

Why I Like This Book: The story and the illustration work together to tell the story of this construction site, which turns out to be an amusement park. The story and the art make this book an easy one to read again and again and again. B is for a Bulldozer blends a love of all things construction with a simple story.  This board book would make a nice gift for new parents and toddlers. June Sobel explains why she didn’t illustrate her own story on her website.
