Here’s my Perfect Picture Book Friday choice for Mother’s Day weekend:
Baby Penguins Love Their Mama!
Written and Illustrated by Melissa Guion
Philomel Books, An imprint of Penguin Group, 2014
Fiction
Suitable for: Ages 4-8
Themes/Topics: Mothers, Family, Concept: Days of the week, Animals, Penguins
Opening Lines: Once there was a family of penguins. A mama penguin . . .
Synopsis from Amazon: When you’re a mama penguin with lots (and lots) of little ones to take care of, the days can melt together in a blur. Monday: swimming lessons. Tuesday: sliding. Wednesday: waddling. And on and on. Mama loves her babies so much. Do they know, she wonders, just how much?
As it turns out, they do–because they love her just as much! And to show it, they surprise her with a thoughtful gesture of their own on Sunday.
Link to Resources: Melissa Guion has a link on her website to Nothing But Penguins. Think about the activities your mom or dad do with the little ones in the house. For Mother’s Day, you could create a card for your mom and list some of the things she does with you and for you.
Why I like this Book: I love penguins. I love concept books (days of the week). I love mothers. Guion’s debut picture book Baby Penguins Everywhere! was published in 2012. This was another fun, random find at the library.
I hope everyone has a wonderful Mother’s Day Weekend. The baby penguins share a touching message for mamas in this book.
Last month, I shared the book A Mom For Umande by Maria Faulconer. For anyone in the Colorado Springs area, Maria is having a book signing and reading on Saturday, May 10 at 10:30 a.m. at Barnes & Noble, 1565 Briargate Blvd. Umande’s story is very touching and beautifully illustrated by Susan Kathleen Hartung.

Another penguin winner and a perfect choice for Mother’s Day!
I like following Melissa on Twitter because she has such a fun Twitter name: the penguion (aka
@MelissaGuion)
I’ll have to look her up on Twitter. Happy Mother’s Day!
Aw. I love the watercolor illustrations on this one.
Yes Mike, the illustrations are lovely.
Penguins rule! This one sounds like a perfect picture book. Thanks for telling me about it.
It is a perfect one to me. I hope you enjoy it. And, I agree PENGUINS RULE!
Stacy, What a wonderful book for Mother’s Day (which should be everyday!). How cute to combine days of the week with a tribute to Mom. I’ll have to look for this one for my grandblessing who is learning days and months right now.
I always enjoy stories that share concepts with a story! Your grand blessing will hopefully enjoy this.
Love Guion’s penguins! So light they could almost fly.
They are fun illustrations.
Hope your own little penguins share a happy Mother’s Day with you on Sunday!
I hope you do too Wendy! We are expecting snow!?!?
I knew i should have left that stuffed penguin on your porch!
I was trying to resist Dottie, but I cannot resist these books.
This looks like a lot of fun…. but the bird-geek in me wonders: how can a penguin have so many chicks? I thought penguins laid one egg a year – two at the most. Unless her kids are boomarang chicks that leave and come back….
That’s a good question Sue. All the other penguin groups portray one adult and one baby. This one has several … which adds to the fun of the story.
Happy Mother’s Day, Stacy! I love the watercolor in this picture book…well, I love watercolor anywhere. I wonder what the baby penguins did to show their love. Have to read the book, eh?
You always have to read the book Sue. They are very sweet to their mama. Hope you have a happy Mother’s Day.
This darling cover has great kid-appeal. Am a sucker for penguin books. Like that it is a concept book.
Yes. It’s a sweet story and the days of the week add another element.
This cover is just gorgeous. I knew this was an Enzo/Stacey choice and I love it.
We are very predictable Joanna. 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful weekend.
I, too, love penguins! This sounds like a delightful story. I’ve just checked its availability at the library and woohoo! This is one I can get my hands on right away. I was just thinking — all over the land, libraries must do a rollicking business in picture books after every PPBF!
Boy! Penguins are everywhere these days!!!! This one looks pretty cute.
Yes EVERYWHERE! Especially here during the month of May.
This book sounds awesome! 🙂
It is Erik and has a concept element. Weren’t you asking about concept books?
Wow…thanks for featuring the book! That was a nice Mother’s Day surprise for me.
Oh Thanks for stopping by! I hope you had a wonderful Mother’s Day!
