Here’s some US history in a picture book. I AM AN AMERICA The Wong Kim Ark is written by Martha Brockenbrough with Grace Lin and illustrated by Julia Kuo. The book is about a young man who was born in the United States. He was American, but not everyone believed that. His case eventually went to the Supreme Court, where they ruled a person born in the United States is a US citizen. His victory changed the lives of many. A new case about birthright citizenship is with the Supreme Court now. This book takes a really big topic and makes it easier for children to understand. #USHistory #birthrightcitizenship #SupremeCourt

What do elementary students ask authors? Lots of things! I visited Addison Elementary School this week and spoke to k-5 students. It's always fun to see what they think about the book in person. First graders loved that I am twin, because there were several twins in that grade level. Fifth grade was full of applause. All the kids, who read the Percy Jackson books loved the book cover by @victongai. Everyone loves her illustrations in BEFORE I LIVED HERE too. I believe it was second grade who wanted to know why I was there, multiple times. I work at the school part-time. Kids also want to know about 💰️. I had several books that are important to me (and my writing journey) to share with them. I found this trio recently at the library — ALPACA GOES BACK-A TO SCHOOL by Sudipta Bardhan-Quallen and Leeza Hernandez, A ROCK IS BORN by Richard Ho and Lily Williams, and KITTY CATERPILLAR by Annabeth Bondor-Stone, Connor White and Brigette Barrager. A school is creating a collection of giraffe books in honor of a long-time volunteer, who recently passed away. My contribution is IT WILL BE OK A Gentle Story about Worry and Support by Lisa Katzenberger and Jaclyn Sinquett. Giraffe gets stuck and needs a little help — as we all do from time to time.
