Memoirs of a Goldfish
Written By Devin Scillian
Illustrated by Tim Bowers
Sleeping Bear Press, 2010
Suitable for: ages 4-7
Theme/Topic: Feelings, Home, Friendship
Opening Spread: Day One. I swam around my bowl.
Brief Synopsis: From Barnes and Noble —
With his bowl to himself, Goldfish loves his life…until one day…
A personal account from a goldfish on life in his bowl as other intruders crowd him.
Resources: Teaching Guide. Write a memoir about yourself over 14 days. Write about what you do and how you feel.
Why I Like This Book: I checked the lists and hope I’m not a repeat. I discovered this book recently thanks to Flowering Minds. I’m not sure how I’ve missed it over the years. More proof that there are so many great books to discover. I love the format of using the days to tell the Goldfish’s story. There are lots of emotions and friends packed into this book and this bowl.

I don’t know, Stacy…but I checked the calendar…and sad to say, it is almost December…YIKES…where did the year go!
Love this fishbowl story…I will try to get a copy.
Stay safe…I hear you guys got slammed with snow in Colorado. 😉
And Happy Thanksgiving..I’m taking a bit of a blog break next Friday also.
This sounds like a great one! Thanks for posting!
It’s fun.
It’s a fun one.
Nice to see what an extensive teacher’s guide Sleeping Bear Press made for this one. It looks cute. (I hadn’t seen it either!)
I read this book earlier in the year. Clever isn’t it? Thanks for adding it to the list.
What a clever idea for a story — like why didn’t I think of this angle? It sounds like a lot of fun. Enjoyed your activities.
Yay!! So glad you enjoyed the story.
As someone who has a third draft of her memoir written I found the title intriguing. I Love it!
It is on hold at my library and I can’t wait for it to be here. Not what I want in December however. Like you I don’t know where the time went. where did 1984 go?
This looks adorable. I’ve added it to my list 🙂
My daughter read this one at school last year and told me I HAD to check it out. Yup, it was love at first read. This is a fun story with a perfectly unexpected and highly wonderful ending. Thank you for sharing it with us on this PPBF.
This sounds like an interesting idea for a picture book. I will have to check it out. Thanks for telling me about it.
Memoirs of a Goldfish is new to me. Thanks for sharing!
LOVE the idea of writing a 2-wk memoir!
Sounds like a hoot! Just the play on the title itself is priceless! 🙂
One of my favorite genres… Memoir of a goldfish -a good writing prompt. I can him looking out his bowl… Nice way to help kids reflect about life and challenges. 🙂
This is such a fun book! thanks for reminding me… I want to read it again. As for how dates sneak up on us, I think it’s the new stealth calendars.
How fun! it reminds me of the pb by Jamie Lee Curtis–When I was Young: A 4 years old’s Memoir of Her Youth. Isn’t that a terrific title?!
I keep meaning to get a hold of this book. Thanks for the reminder!
Sleeping Bear Press has beautiful books. I put this one on hold. I’ve wondered about writing a days of the week book but haven’t found that perfect idea. This will be a nice mentor text. Thanks for the review.
